{Places to eat: Red’s Diner – a new weekend ritual?}

Ah, how I love the weekend…After my cardio class this morning, it was a decision between catching the 1pm yoga class or brunch at Red’s.. Red’s won.

Today we were craving a nice hearty breakfast, so we headed over to Mission to a place I’ve been wanting to try, Red’s Diner.

After reading some rave reviews by some calgary foodie writers, we knew we had stop in for a bite. A quaint little space in a old brick building that used to be Renfrew furs, its bright and inviting on the inside. We headed over there on Sunday at about 12:30pm and got a couple seats at the bar right away. The staff here are quick and friendly and were all rockin black shirts with their signature red rooster.

The menu consisted of a lot of the usual breakfast comfort foods: eggs bennie, pancakes, omelettes, eggs your way with sausage, hash browns, etc. They also had a variety of sandwiches and vegan options too, which was a nice addition to see on the menu.

After much contemplation, I decided to go with the Vegan tofu scramble w/ oven roasted tomatoes, spinich & roasted red peppers. It came with a side of the Red’s potatoes. Mmm.. Delicious and filling, didn’t even miss the eggs. Loved the potatoes too, not greasy like a lot of restaurants serve them up.

The boy went with the Prairie breakfast plate – 2 eggs overeasy, homemade potato cheddar perogies, slices of Rocky’s Keilbasa and a generous serving of sour cream, and a side of multigrain toast and potatoes. A true hungry man meal. Lots of “mms..” coming from the boy as he cleaned his plate. I assumed that meant it was delicious. I stole of a bite of the perogie , creamy & rich filling and infused with the flavour of the keilbasa. Yum…

After reading some rave reviws about their buttermilk buckwheat pancakes, we ordered up two for us to share. Smeared with some whipped butter and a drizzle of maple syrup, they definately lived up to their hype. Perfectly cooked with a nice chew & nutty flavour from the buckwheat, fluffy and crisp exterior. Hrm.. I could have probably eaten another two of these.

We left the place feeling perfectly full and satisfied (not too stuffed, which can often happen when you eat diner style food). We were so impressed that we are thinking of making this a regular Sunday ritual.

Other noteworthy items I’m eager to try off the menu in the future:

  • Highwood Crossing Oatmeal Brulee w/ cinnamon sugar topping
  • Red quinoa w/ maple roasted almonds, pumpkin seeds and soy milk
  • Granola waffle wedges w/ field berry compote
  • Baked mac and cheese / four cheese bechamel and fresh herb gratin
  • Burnt caramel chocolate crepes w/ orange syrup + vanilla whipped cream
  • Milkshake made w/ Mackay’s ice cream or the Jack Daniels ice cream float
