{Union Square Cafe’s bar nuts and what I’m loving lately..}

Hope you all had a nice New Year’s weekend. On New Year’s Eve, me and the boy headed over to our friend’s place to watch the hockey game, play some jeopardy on the Wii and a brief game of Cranium all while sipping away on bottles of Cabernet Sauvignon and two bottles of bubbly…twas a lovely evening..

Instead of a full dinner, we opted to make a bunch of appies, one of the favourite items I made were these Union Square Cafe’s Bar nuts.

I first heard about these delightful bites while watching the Food Network Show, “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” where Giada raved about them..So a quick search on the computer and into the kitchen I went..The smell of earthy rosemary, melted butter and brown sugar mixed with the hot roasted nuts is unbelievable and they’re super easy to make too..

Try these at your next get together or just whip up a small batch at home for yourself. Best enjoyed warm out of the oven..goes great with beer and monday night football or your favourite guilty pleasure reality show..

Union Square Cafe’s bar nuts (via the Food Network website)

  • 2 1/4 cups (18-ounces) assorted unsalted nuts – peeled peanuts, cashews, Brazil nuts, hazelnuts, walnuts, pecans and whole unpeeled almonds (I just used almonds and pecans)
  • 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh rosemary (I only had dried on hand, still tasted great)
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 2 teaspoons dark brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons Maldon or other sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, melted

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Toss the nuts in a large bowl to combine and spread them out on a baking sheet. Toast in the oven until light golden brown, about 10 minutes.

In a large bowl, combine the rosemary, cayenne, sugar, salt and melted butter.

Thoroughly toss the toasted nuts in the spiced butter and serve warm. And once you eat these, you will never want to stop.

Other things I’m loving lately…Thai food. Me and the boy have both had MAD cravings for it. We’ve gotten takeout from our go-to place, Ruan Thai twice in the past three days…For the boy, it’s in the form of this Extra Spicy Seafood Soup. A mountain of seafood (scallops, mussels, shrimp, squid, crab) simmered in a super flavourful broth with vegetables, aromatic lemongrass and lime leaves and a whole lot of thai chilies..

For me, my favourite is either their Pad Thai or this Vegetarian Panang Curry served with a side of their fluffy coconut rice..

chunks of crispy tofu, broccoli florets, green and red peppers in a panang curry coconut sauce sprinkled with ribbons of lime leaves…a-mazing…

Current sweet addictions…the Caramel Pecan Cinnamon Sticky Bun from the Wild Grainz Bakery..

…the perfect indulgence on the weekend..be sure to get there bright and early when they’re fresh out of the oven…a warm sticky and decadent mess of pure deliciousness..

..I’m also loving the Chocolate Ginger Milk from Caffe Beano. Made by melting Bernard Callebaut dark chocolate shavings with warm and spicy ginger in with your choice of milk (regular, soy or almond) which is then topped with MORE chocolate shavings…soo..good.

What I love about it too is it’s not too sweet like a lot of other coffee shop hot chocolates, which allows you to enjoy the rich high quality chocolate. Not a fan of ginger? You can get a regular hot chocolate too…

With a new year comes resolutions for 2011, tune in for my next post when I go over my list of goals I’ve planned.

Speaking of resolutions, I got THREE duplicate fortunes in one cookie in our takeout the other night…
