{Date night at Cassis Bistro, Beers at Wurst and Mixed mushroom Tortellini}

It is just me, or does summer feel like it’s just flying by. I can’t believe September is almost upon us. I’m crossing my fingers that our beautiful sunny days will stick around here for a while longer.

One thing that I can rely on..delicious weekly date nights 🙂 This past Thursday we booked ourselves a table at a restaurant I’ve been meaning to try since it opened, Cassis Bistro in my favourite market of the moment, Casel Marche (located at the bottom of the Casel Condo building on 17th ave).

Me and the boy are huge fans of the French market cafe, L’Epicurie and I am obsessed with the butter and sugar crepes at Le Petit Mousse (both run by executive chef, Dominique Moussu). So when I heard that we would be running the kitchen at Cassis, we couldn’t wait to plan a night out at the French bistro.

The cuisine features simple and fresh food with inspiration from the South of France. The bistro itself is fairly small and tucked into the back of the market, a bright and open space surrounded by windows with a minimalist approach to the decor.

The restaurant was at full capacity when we arrived (good thing we made resos) and it was quite noticable that we were at least 20 or more years younger than everyone else in the place (just an observation).

Anyway, we started the night off right with a couple glasses of vino..

For our appetizer, we shared the Alberta Beef Tartare “au couteau”finely chopped Sunworks Farms tender raw beef seasoned with capers and onions surrounded by bite sized crostini and a raw egg which we could mix with the tartare ourselves.

A simple and classic dish, the beef just melted in your mouth. You can’t go wrong with fresh and quality ingredients. I tend to like a bit more “zip” to my dish, perhaps some spicy French mustard and some chopped gherkins to contrast the salty capers.

For our mains, the boy went ordered the Sunworks Farm Chicken Basquaiseslow roasted tomato, garlic and bell pepper atop a juicy and tender leg of chicken atop a bed of seasoned rice and a stacked lettuce salad.

I went with the Red Spring Salmonpan-fried and served alongside lightly dressed spinach and a roasted vegetable tian (whisper thin slices of tomato, zucchini and eggplant).

This is the best salmon I’ve had in a while! Cooked to absolute perfection with a lovely crisp skin. Simply seasoned to really let you enjoy the flavours of the fish. The equally delicious vegetable tian tasted as good as it looked. The slow roasting really enhanced the flavours of the delicate vegetables, I could have EASILY had a 3-4 more portions of this..

Their desserts are made fresh and change daily. Tonight our choices were a double chocolate eclair or a lemon tart…Obviously I voted for the chocolate..


This tasted EXACTLY like the eclairs I had at Fauchon in Paris. Remember that one I had with the picture of Mona Lisa printed on the chocolate..yea…that good.

It was one of those desserts where after the first bite, I’m already thinking about how sad I’ll be when it’s all gone…and I was. When we were done, I found myself thinking about how much I’d love to go back into the kitchen and hoard a whole tray full of these to bring back home.

Hrmm.. yes..and how would I be able to do this and NOT get myself banned from the place..

Needless to say it was the perfect end to a beautifully satisfying French meal. We will definitely be back soon 🙂

Afterwards we drove over to the Mission area to Wurst, the always busy German inspired beer hall for a couple of bevies to celebrate a friend’s birthday.

I had their Schofferhofer – a light crisp beer made with real grapefruit juice. My beer of the moment. (Craft Beer Market carries a similar beer called the Stiegl Radler).

Ladies, even you non beer drinkers would like this one. So refreshing, citrusy and crisp.

The boy had the Pinkus Muller Organic – a delicious traditional German ale.

And then the boots started to arrive at our table..This one was the birthday boy’s drink..2 litres of fermented goodness..Let the partying begin.

We stuck around for another “regular” sized drink before calling it a night (Hey, it’s a Thursday, I need my sleep!)

Some other highlights from the weekend..On Saturday I grabbed the most delicious vegetable baguette sandwich at Casel Marche (made with olive tapenade, marianted zucchini and eggplant ribbons, tomatoe and arugula). It was pricey at $7.50, but a yummy splurge when you’re starving and can’t wait to get home to make lunch.

The next day I made my own sandwich in wrap form with ingredients from their beautiful organic market. A Tres Marias spelt tortilla filled with juicy organic orange tomato, slices of cucumber, cilantro hummus, peashoots, Noble Farms black pepper goat cheese and wedges of black figs.

Fresh flavours, the perfect post run lunch after a super sweaty and tough 32km training session.

And for dessert, a venti half sweet shaken black iced tea from Starbucks (current fave) and the feature of the month from Crave Cupcakes, their cinnamon sugar dusted mini donut cupcake.

Along with an unpictured half a dozen mini peanut butter chocolate cupcakes and red velvet cream cheese cupcakes to pop into my freezer for those sweet emergencies seeing as it has been WAY to hot to bake lately.

After the gym tonight, I came home craving pasta, so I whipped up this for dinner: Cheese filled tortellini with mixed mushrooms, arugula, goat cheese and fresh dill.

I simply cooked up a batch of fresh tortellini (as per package directions), drain and set aside, reserving about 2/3 cup of pasta water. In another pan, I sauteed 1/2 chopped onion with 2 slices of chopped bacon. Then added in a couple handfuls of cremini mushrooms and a handful of shitake (which I had soaked overnight). Add in the pasta and about 1/4 cup of crumbled goat cheese and the reserved pasta water. Toss together with a bunch of baby arugula till wilted and at the last-minute add your dill. Season with pepper and salt and dinner is ready!

A quick and easy weeknight dinner.

For dessert, why whip up a batch of these super easy lemony coconut macaroons. The recipe would not be more simple. I followed this recipe here and added in the zest of one lemon for an added zing. (The recipe says it makes 4, but I made my mounds smaller and yielded about 8 of these cookies).

You could make these more decadent by dipping the bottoms in melted white chocolate when they are cooled, or how about adding in a spoonful of fragrant lavender to the batter for a sophisticated twist.

    I’ve been waiting to try Cassis too, that eclair has me drooling! The mushroom tortellini looks amazingly appealing as well. I should probably eat lunch now. 🙂

    • haha, I have that same problem listening to food podcasts at work.. I end up hungry ALL day.

      The eclair was definitely pricey at $8, but the memories of Paris were well worth it. Yes, definitely give Cassis a try, the service was great and the food is seasonal and satisfying 🙂
